I’m currently *obsessed* with these cute little layered sassy doormats! I want one for all of the holidays, maybe with a coordinating wreath? Yes… definitely!

I tried several different methods before landing on this one, and will share with you the best way to make your own custom doormat.
You should be able to complete your rug in a few hours, but the outdoor paint should cure indoors for 48 hours before it graces your doorstep!
Hit the craft store (or Amazon) and get your supplies ready!
Create your stencil
Setup your design in Cricut Design Space. Since my design is larger than the Cricut can do, I had to make it in 4 different pieces. It’s not as bad as it sounds!
I created a box around the text I wanted and used “slice” to create a box with the inside text cut out.
You’ll need to reverse weed so the text is removed and the box is left, like a stencil.
Prep the Doormat
The vinyl won’t stick very well to the rug, so it’ll take a bit of finagling to get it in place. I found it easiest to peel the vinyl from the backing and laying it directly onto the rug. Any spots from the insides of letters can easily be placed separately.
Use painters tape on the sides to hold the vinyl square in place.
Cover with parchment paper and use the Cricut Easy Press to adhere the vinyl to the rug. It took about 5 seconds on 300 degrees. You don’t want much more than that, as we’ll still need to be able to pull it off.
Paint!
You can use any brush to apply the outdoor paint. I preferred the stencil brush as it was easier to push the paint in between the fibers of the rug.
You can do as many colors as you want, even in different layers as it dries! I did my rug in two different steps; welcome and our last name in one and the “to the” in a second. It wasn’t necessary, but made it easier.
Let dry for 12-24 hours before peeling the vinyl stencil off.
Outdoor paint will need to cure 48 hours before gracing your doorstep, so you can look at your beauty indoors for a few days first!
Style it
I layered my welcome mat with a larger buffalo checkered rug. I love the black and white, but will probably order the red and black one for a holiday mat!
I used the 3′ x 5′ rug for my 24″ x 36″ doormat.
